Don't know if this applies, but how and when did you become the root user?
If by chance you cd'd into the cdrom and then su'd to root the original bash
shell is in the cdrom directory

this is linux there can be if you want. put this in ~/.bashrc
alias MURDER='kill -9'
Not sure it is your problem though if your cd is /mnt
Make sure you are not currently in the cd. By that I mean, for example a
"normal" RedHat install, somewhere in /mnt/cdrom/.
You can always just issue "cd" and it will return you to your home
directory. Then "eject". I believe by default this will eject /dev/cdrom
(including umounting if needed).

hehehe, the MURDER command is "kill -9 ".
I think RH runs the autofs service by default which auto mounts CDs. If
you don't like that, turn off autofs.
