Do you have /usr/sbin/inetd? That's the executable
Also, check for the presence of /etc/rc.d/init.d/inetd...this is the
startup script for inet.
If it exists, try, as root, "service inet start"
However, my suspicion is that you did a workstation install, and didn't
wind up installing inetd at

You can check if you have inetd installed running the command
rpm -q inetd
(the files on this rpm are
/etc/inetd.conf
/etc/rc.d/init.d/inet
/usr/man/man5/inetd.conf.5.gz
/usr/man/man8/inetd.8.gz
/usr/sbin/inetd

i just installed a brand new install for
I had the same problem . please check if it is installed using
rpm -q inetd.conf
In my case it was not installed by default so I had to do it manually .

if you don't have it.. you need to get it (get it from the updates
tho... not the CD) :)
in fact.. make sure you hit the updates and update everything and I mean
everything before you do anything else (those hit by the Ramen worm will
back me up on this one) :)
