10/100MB switch or hub. It may be a negotiation or even a duplex
issue. I've had problem like you describe, although usually only with
fiber.

Hey, I'm having a problem with my ethernet card under redhat. When I
start up the ethernet card's active light won't come on, but if I wait a
couple minutes, then initiate a ping on the machine, pull the ethernet
cable out of the card and reinsert it a couple of times and wave a dead
chicken over
With Red Hat 6.1 i'm having this very odd problem:
my cable modem was working fine. then all of a sudden (with the same
configuration) it is not. when i try to ping something i can see the
activitiy lights working but i'm getting nothing returned to the machine.
