Frustrating, I swear I didn't see it, I reconfigured it at least 10 times,
because it kept compiling to an error. Do some kernels (this one was in
the 2.0.8 range) not include ppp support in the config file? Can I add it
as a module or should I just recompile?

to compile a new kernel (besides the useful knowledge) was to incorporate
the ppp
