I had the same problem. I read about setserial on this list and that
showed me the way!
Check the man pages for how to use setserial. If you have a windows
partition and a PnP modem, check on the windows side to make sure you know
which port and irq your modem has been assigned. Mine used irq

I just installed 5.0 and got one serious problem (for me only I hope :)
After boot it have no default gateway. I add it by commands
route add gatewayhost
route add default gw gatewayhost
Then box runnin' some time and the gateway suddenly disappearin'. I do this
