Joe, I've melted PL259 connectors on 20 meters but never seen one glow because of the spring becoming so hot. Bet it took the temper and tension out of that spring. We had a Radio Shack store in town catch on fire last year. Someone placed some combustible liquid next to a space heater

I was guessing you meant DB-224, not DB-204. The 224 is a four bay folded dipole array with 6 dB omni gain. The DB-224 would be the best choice for top mouting if you are in a lightning prone area, as the G7- 220 has a top whip about 1/8" thick that would probably vaporize with the right hit.
