Hi Jed,
I've got signals flying everywhere with a gazillion different models
of the Kenwood ham and commercial LMR radios. (also a lot of other
radio brands doing link radio duty).
Older Kenwood radios have a drop in accessory cable (under $15 to
$20 typical) that brings most all of the
They will work but the Motorola SM-50 radio works much better and you don't
have to modify the VCO.

What Kenwood radios do you need to modify the VCO on to get them to work
on the ham bands? Every Kenwood commercial rig I've played with since

I am aware and have some that tune to the 420-470 band. And those radios are
the TK-8180K2 radios. The other radios i am talking about are the TK-880K
radios. You will need to modify the VCO if you want them to perform below
440mhz. I would prefer to use the Kenwood but the time it takes to
VCO War Stories...? anyway...
Until I replaced my vehicle Kenwood TK-880 TK-780 radio stack
last year with the current TK-8180 and TK-7180 radio... I ran
my un-modified TK-880 into the 440-450 Amatuer Band.
But not all the way... the receiver sens fell off some and the vco
didn't like
Hi Skip,
Sounds like you have expermented like i have been doing for sometime. The
780/880 radios work great in the 440 band however in the 430 not without moding
them. The SM50 radios work great at the bigest site in Oregon and lets say the
1000ft tower is definatly loaded. The trick is to
Sorry for the off topic, but does anyone know how to get into the front
panel programming on this radio? I held in the monitor button but that
does not work. Thanks.

Has anyone had time to try out the new MOTOTRBO digital stuff?? It seems
to be far less expensive than P25, and you can have a 2:1 ratio (2 voice
conversations on one RF channel simultaneously ). Also, since it is a
TDMA format, would that be legal to play with on the amateur bands

James WJ1D,
I don't think you can Use TDMA On Ham Radio . You
can Use Astro P25 IMBE Digital On Ham Radio . I use Astro P25 IMBE Myself .

Has anyone ever experimented with a diversity antenna configuration on
a repeater? That is, using 2 antennas, mounted at different
building/tower locations, but connected to a single duplexer?
I suppose a controller/router/voter of some sort would be necessary to
insure that the antenna

Tony,
If one or more receivers are installed at a site that is distant from the
transmitter, the duplexer is not needed at all. That is what a split site
system is. When there are two or more receivers, a voting system is used to
select the receiver with the best signal. A multiple-receiver

Hi Ken,
When you are dealing with 1000ft towers and so much rf at the site. It only
makes since to implement a diversity antenna system. Its only RF and if
cellular can have diversity antenna circuitry so can we. Yes it takes a lot
of resources and time but the payoff out weighs the cons and
Coy, it has been 3 weeks since I sent you my home address and still no
manual. What gives?
