colour wouldnt work so well because they wont be easily visible (possibly) with colourful backgrounds... Nah, sufficient contrast in the image as well as drop shadowing helps that alot. I've never observed difficulty seeing color icons on a wide range of backdrop colors/images if carefully

On 15/ We've gone withthe + for submenus and a dot for commands... Guess I missed out on the debate but + is used for expandable tree items in UIs and it's meaning I think well established. I guess I don't understand why these common conventions should be ignored and something else reinvented
