By default the size we use is 32 bytes. (that's for the data part of the
ICMP frame).
You can change this by creating:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\DBU Consulting\Servers Alive\PingSize
(string)
And give it the value you want to have for the data part.

Hello,
Our area ISPs have started blocking ICMP traffic with approximately
60-byte packet size as this is a signature of W32.Sasser traffic. As a

OK so it looks like this is usefull.
However keep in mind that the check will performed as it is now and with the
same messages/descriptions/error/... BUT we will at the end invert the
status from up to down, or down to up.

We could definitely use this for the same reasons as already stated -
monitoring services or boxes that should NOT be running. We currently
have the 'positive' check in Servers Alive and hope everyone remembers
that they need to respond on the "Up" and not on the "Down". It's a
poor patch, but at
I could use it to monitor clustered services. For instance, I would
like an alert for the SQL Service on the secondary SQL node to alert me
if the SQL Service is running since this would mean that the primary
node has failed.

Very much so.
I want to know if someone starts up services that have been purposely disabled on certain servers.
Also, some workstations have been removed from the network and I would like to be alerted if they are brought back online.
