 This shows that the authentication as such did work (username/password are
correct), the logging (in SA) however says that you can't access the requested
resource (not enough rights).

So both are failing?
If you look in the remote eventlog does it show the user you configured for the
check

connect to the NT Services of a server that is not joined to our domain.
It's not joined to any domain for that matter. It was setup by a 3rd party,
