Jack,
If I understand your problem correctly, the ISDN and T1 interfaces end up at
the same far-side (farthest from the Servers Alive box) IP address. So
pinging that address will be of no value.
Can you add a secondary IP address on the far-side interface you want to
monitor and use that addres
For #2 - you could also do an http check if they're recent ( < 3 years old
or so) for the built-in webserver on the JetDirect device. That works for
JetDirect cards in printers as well...

I've tried this process - going from SA 3.2 to 3.3x - and it seems to have
failed to load the Servers Alive service.
During the install, I get an error message:
The specified device does not exist as an installed service.

As long as you're in a batch file, you should get the services of the
command interpreter.
So echo text >> file works in a batch file, or at the command line, but not
as a "start|Run" command. "echo" isn't an executable, just a command.com
command - like "dir" or "cd"

Doesn't it need to come out as a DOS-style errorlevel, not, for example, a
text string to standard-out? (possibly the wrong term)

If that fails, you may want to try "nbtstat -a servername" (the "a" must be
lowercase).
Or "nbtstat -A 10.10.10.10" where 10.10.10.10 is the remote machine IP
address (now the "A" must be uppercase).
Net View will test for access to enumerate shares and requires NetBIOS
communication and name reso

You may want to use a series of "net use" commands and connect to the ipc$

Stefano,
Have you tried using "(machinename)\(username)" for the login name field in
the login box?
It sounds like the SA machine is using the domain security context by
default when attaching to non-domain machines. This sounds like normal
behavior for NT/2000 authentication.

For remote command execution,
try psexec - part of PSTools - from www.sysinternals.com.
It's extremely powerful when
administering systems - you can start a wide range of processes remotely.
Using psexec with batch programs can do great things for sysadmin
productivity.

If it's on Windows 2000 server, you could adjust the recovery properties of
the service.
Since it's outside the firewall (a ms-sql database? better not to ask...)
you could set one of the "failure" tasks to "run a file." Point that to a

Does the Servers Alive service run as the local account? Even though you
specify privileges in the system checks, the SA service may not have
sufficient rights to get out to the network if it's running as "Local
System."

JoJo,
Sure. The URL check in Servers Alive is very flexible.
Browse the site and pick up whatever error IE returns - "invalid server
name" or something. Enter that string in the "should contain" text field
and alert if you get anything else.
Or you can do the opposite - turn "on" the site for

My manager would like an email alert daily, preferably at 8:00 AM, that says
"this server is up" after a URL check.
I can do the URL check with a text string just fine, but I don't see how to
trigger an "Everything's OK" message.
Any thoughts?
