maybe I am missing something here, but if
you are running SA as a service, you should be able to install the free 10 user
version of SA on another pc or server in the same LAN or WAN backbone, and be
able
service hangs, you don't have to go and check SA when
something fails to
occur.

I do a similar check by pinging the host machine once a day (every 200 cycles I think)
then I have the alert set to always send an alert. If I don't get a message every day,
I take a look.

I have a low-tech method of monitoring it. I have a
"home page" that I leave my browser up on my desktop at all times, and it's set
to refresh to itself every 5 minutes. That page is actually an
ServersAlive ASP template (among other things) so I can see how my servers are
doing.
