Your SIDs don't match someplace, I'd guess the computer account is from an old domain. Try to remove the computer (revert to workgroup) and then rejoin your domain. This is assuming that you have been able to join computers to the domain successfully, but I'd infer that to be the case by you

I had successfully installed 2.2.8a version just fine. Similarly, I have used the sam machine to install 3.0.2, however, whereas I used smbpasswd to join the domain on 2.2.2a, it appears that that is done with net join in 3.0.2 and it fails. Is a special account needed for this process in 3.0
