Some users have started complaining that it is taken a considerable time when
saving data back to the shared SMB drive
In my /var/log/samba/log/smbd

Dear Samba Community,
Because Apple has transitioned away from the open-source SAMBA protocol for
their new 10.7 release of Mac OS X, I was wondering if there is a
third-party solution to fill this void. Because OS X is based on Darwin,
and Darwin is an open-source free version of UNIX, I
for samba while running mac osx snow leopard shows data
that appears to indicate that my computer has been connected via this
software to share files. I have never used any file sharing software
nor did I know what samba was prior to discovering these logs though I
have other reasons to believe

On my Mac it just works as installed with the OS, no guide needed. Point and
click.
What is missing
Hi all,
We are having an issue when a user writes to there home directory the
permissions change to 0600, instead of 0751 that
we have been setting in smb.conf
Here is a description of the problem:
reinstalled mac osx we have:
1) OS 10.5.0
I mounted SAMBA SERVER with Prof Sutherlands
and delete files.
Also I can copy files between mac and samba using the terminal and the
CP command.
The only thing I can't do is drag and drop file in the samba share.
Has anyone some ideas about this matter?
Thanks a lot,
Matteo

Hi John,
I know from experience that OS X and Samba work just fine together, I
even had Kerberos auth to AD working (works pretty much by default
actually). Two suggestions, have u tried connecting from the GUI rather
than command line (maybe something in the command syntax u are trying isnt
On my network, when a mac client tries to access a windows share, they
are presented with a dialog box, prompting them for the share to connect
and then the authentication credentials.
However, when a mac client tires to connect to a samba share, it

Thank you Stewart,
Going back to basics, I checked what ports smbd listens:
netstat -lnp |grep smb
tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:445 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 8330/smbd
My smb.conf had an 'smb ports' option with a note:
#Added ports option to clear the error: 'getpeername failed. Error was

Hi there,
I am struggling to find more info on the opendirectorypdbconfig tool for
Open Directory and Samba integration in Mac OS X Server 10.4. Thought here
I may get pointed to the right direction.
Thanks

hi
we've had nearly the same setup and also run into problems
what we did is, we copied the files with a MAC in between (between nt
server and samba)
we made a netatalk share, copied the files via afp (or smb from mac, if
you're not workgin with afp on MAC) and then shared this share also in
Here are some more messages that pop in the server logs when I try
to read folders on a Win2K file server - the folders/files were saved
from a Macintosh on the network:
smb_proc_readdir_long: name=\Font Library\B\Bernhard BoldCond. et al?\*,
result=-2, rcls=1, err=123
I have a Win2K Server that acts as a file server to a bunch of
Macintosh machines on the network. Today I installed samba-3.0.5 on a
Fedora1 machine, and mounted one of the server shares and tried to read
it. Much to my surprise, I found files that are being listed like this:

Hi
I have an ethernet link between these two machines.
I can share an internet connection with the mac as the host.
I can ping the amiga from Mac with 100% packets returned.
I can see a link to Amiga in the network window in the launcher on the
Mac.
However when I try to 'connect to server' from
I'm having an annoying problem.
On my Linux Server (with Samba 3.0.3) I am using the samba option of
'include = /etc/samba/smb.%U.conf'
so that users mostly only see shares that specifically belong to them.
This approach works perfectly on Windows XP workstations. After a user logs

If you mean login as in authenticate the whole machine off of a Samba
server, the key variable there is whether you are using LDAP or not as the
backend of said server. If thats the case, then yes - you can feel free
to email me off list and Ill tell you what I know (not much, but Im sure I

I have successfully install samba on multiple boxes running Linux. I now have a MAC
