You can use smbpasswd or pdbedit to add a samba user. Actually, if the
LDAP user already exists the smbpasswd or pdbedit command adds various
samba attributes.
You should look at the LDAP properties of a user before and after you

Regarding the "primary group of [root] not found" message, the sambaSID of
"Domain Admins" is the same as the sambaPrimaryGroupSID in "root". The user
root is inside the group "Users".

The RID portion doesn't really matters as it doesn't clash with known
RIDs (below 1000), and other created RIDs (you cannot have two accounts
with the same RID, composing the same SID).

accounts created that way. I dont think is a good idea to call a
workaround used on a system that someone didnt got it working properly

I'm using samba 3(.0.13) with OpenLDAP and I have a strange problem:
the variables %U and %G don't seem to be replaced by their values.
I get nothing in my logs, so I don't know where is the problem...
In fact, in my smb.conf, I have something like:

logon path = \\
It appears that Samba needs to be restarted in order for the search base to be
reset. Is this a bug? The BaseDN was reset without doing anything other
than editing the smb.conf. But even then, viewing of the LDAP logs showed
that the search base was still including the old DN.

It does seem odd that there is no ./configure for smbldap.
It could be used to parse ldap.conf/smb.conf and reduce the number of
config files in the short term.
