Hello friends,
I'm very happy that I find my HP 7400c - avision backend - fully
functional at my ubuntu 16.10 box again. Just adding
ppa:rolfbensch/sane-git and updating the system/sane did the trick.
Up to now no single failure - coloured or b&w, single or multiple pages
- everything works fine.
All,
Upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04. And was using gscan2pdf when I realized that I
could not scan in any other mode than color. Previous version, 10.04
Ubuntu, I could scan in all three modes, color, line art & gray scale.
This does not appear to be the case with the sane-backend 1.0.22
installed.

Hi, I dson't mean to instrude, but I'm trying to get my HP 8250 scanner to work
with Sane. I'm using PCLinuxOS 2009.2. The backend they have is 1.0.19. the
scanner works with p[revious backend versions. for instance, it works using
backne 1.0.14 in LinuxMint 4.0.

It is not that I can not read carefully, but that I had found that the
su command could not be run due to my only password being rejected. I
therefore hoped that sudo would do and that is why I spelt out that I
had used sudo not su. I had been given advice to use sudo in another

Maybe sudo doesnt check if your UID is in group 0 in /etc/group.
whereas su does check & bounce
Allan
When I run su and put in my login password it is rejected as an
authentication failure. When I use the same password in sudo, it works!
Do you have a work around?

Thank you very much for your help.
I assume that running it as root means putting sudo in front.
I can not run the command:
sudo SANE_DEBUG_AVISION=7 scanimage -L
it gives a command not found error.

scanning in all mod
I have exactly the same problem with this scanner.
It just does not work. Scanning hangs no matter what I set in
avision.conf.
Here is a piece of log:

export SANE_DEBUG_SANEI_USB=255
Comment everything but "avision" in dll.con
I have recently bought an HP 8250 scanner and tried to use it with
sane. Although the scanner support is marked as "good" it hangs when
trying to communicate with it.
scanimage -L recognizes device as 'avision:libusb:005:003' as a 'HP
ScanJet 8200 flatbed scanner'
scanimage -T hangs after turning

Hi,
Hey, I just want to help and know what should be fixed in SANE. No
oofense intended :-) Keep in mind that I (and quite a lot of others on
this list) are not native English speakers so the meaning of my words
may be a bit different from what I write.

A while back someone posted a great deal of information about the
Avision scanners on my UMAX WikiWiki. I'm not sure if the info
is useful to you or not. The UMAX WikiWiki is here:

I cannot seem to find a live site which has the Avision Sane back end on
it. Can anyone help by sending me a latest (that you have) zipped copy
of the source code. We are working on a number of HP backends and want
to sort out the 5200 and 7400 units.
Also Does anyone have ANY copy of ANY Avision
Hi all.
So. I'm back with active development for the sane/avision-backend ...
Attached is a slightly modified avision.c (patch against sane-1.0.6).
It doesn't yet do the software color-packing ... - But it includes
all vendor strings I was able to find, outputs some scanner parameters
