Any progress on this front yet? I have a Canoscan 5600F too and unfortunately
it won't work in Ubuntu 10.10. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It's been some rough times, but I am now back, so reopening this thread.
I have taken the last git repositories, compiled sane-backends and

sane-backends 'make install' will not overwrite your existing configs.
so you might need to copy genesys.conf into /etc/sane.d, if you have
built your new version of sane-backends to overwrite the old one.
