TW, I didn't see the 'not available' response for port 53, which makes
sense I guess since I still see the delay. And I am pretty sure port 53
is correct. Frustrating.
Thanks,

Last weekend I posted the thread 'slow loading browser homepage'. I got
useful feedback from several people that helped narrow the problem to
the order that nameservers are listed in my 'dhclient-eth0.leases' file.
It has the line:
option domain-name-servers 192.168.0.1,216.177.225.9;

T,
Yes, using an IP address rather than 'google.com' give MUCH faster SL
response. Unfortunately the problem isn't just for Google, I get slow
loading of any URL. So clearly I have a nameservice problem with SL
that isn't present with XP. Are you saying that the reason XP avoids
this is because
at message is displayed while it's waiting for a response.

I run a dual boot (SL 6.4/Windows XP) workstation. SL is 64 bit, XP is
32 bit. I have Firefox and Konqueror browsers on SL; Firefox, IE, and
Google Chrome on XP. For all browser choices I notice that when my
browser home page loads (Google.com for all cases), the XP load times
are very quick (<
I recently upgraded my workstation from SL 5.5 to 6.4. Now for some
reason I an no longer getting automounts of removable USB devices, e.g.
thumb drives. In other words, I am not getting the expected appearance
of a device icon on my desktop as I did with 5.5. The devices are

I just upgraded my system from 5.5 to 6.4 (64 bit) and have one
outstanding issue still plaguing me. Firefox does not find the java
plugin, which disables many web applications I need. I have seen web
chatter in several sites about this problem, including SL, so it
certainly must be widespread.
Over the weekend on my workstation I did an SL re-install from 5.5 to
6.4. So far my system seems to be running everything I want, with one
exception. I had 'mplayer' working under 5.5, but have a problem with
6.4. I tried to install it from 2 different repos (atrpms, dag), but in
both cases the
