Tyler Perry is to new Spike Lee as New Coke is to Coke - a watered down substitute. Lee went to NYU film school and has real filmmaking chops. Perry didn't and doesn't. His films are so raggedy they embarrass me - and EYE ain't got nothing to do with it. ~(no)rave! --- In scifinoir2@yahoo

I revisit "She's Gotta Have It" often because I think it is a lovely film. Lee's early films suffer because he had too many tools in his trick bag and he wanted to use them all. Early Spike often went for the showy - the "look-at-me" shot or technique - as if he was trying to show everybody w

This argument is further compromised by the fact that Spike Lee's third movie was "Do the Right Thing," widely lauded as one of the 100 best movies ever made. Perry's third film is "Why Did I Get Married?" Nuff said. ~rave! --- In scifinoir2@yahoogroups.com, Daryle <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: >

I wasn't going to give my thoughts on Tylers film. In full disclosure I thought the movie was boring, plot-holed ladden, and unrealistic in some of its resolutions. That aside, I appreciate Tylers success, he's using his gifts. I don't think the film sold on his name alone or just because he w

What I do adore about Tyler Perry is his choice of current underutilized black actors and actresses. A white auteur would have cast this movie entirely differently. No way would Janet Jackson and Jill Scott be in it. Also, he is providing roles and paychecks for movie and sitcom stars from y

Question: have you seen Perry's "House of Payne"? If you have, what do you think about it? Perry has complete creative control and a 130 episode order (enough to make mucho bank in syndication when that time comes). If you are not familiar with it, check it out and see what he did with that

I would suggest looking at ³She¹s Gotta Have It² and ³School Daze² again. I did. Overused crane shots and bad editing were staples of his early work. And by early work -- I mean the first 6 films. The dude who did ³25th Hour² and ³Inside Man² is a wy more mature filmmaker than the dude who did

"House of Payne" sucks, I'll freely admit. Poor writing, canned jokes, bad characters, silly plots. It's as if he distilled the worst of his stage plays' formula and put them on the small screen. But that doesn't detract for my admiration for what he's doing on the big screen -
