NTFS permissions are applied however you access a file, whether though a
share, or by console access, SMB, terminal services etc. Share
permissions are only applied when accessing the files through that
particular share.

Try Zebedee. Very easy to setup, and secure. Can use it to wrap
vnc/terminal services.

, there is the option for installing the site on a clients server.
Is there any way to encrypt this so that the server can read it, but the
clients cannot?
Thanks,

I fail to see how. If one of my users gets a virus, and it spreads via
the network, then it will spread to that share if they have write access
to it. Whether I set the ntfs permissions only, or both share and ntfs
permissions, it will make no difference.

Thanks for all your input.
Yes, we had considered Oracle, but the cost ruled it out. Acutally, the
cost of MS SQL also rules it out. I think the end result is going to be
PostgresSQL.
Again, thanks for the help.

Personally, I run a RH 7.3 box running apache, sendmail, and bind and a
couple of other services, and use logwatch to monitor them all. I works
pretty well, never had any problems with it.

Currently I use Kiwi Syslogs summary email, but it doesn't really give
me useful stats, it is more for routing messages about the place.

Thanks to all who replied. I eventually went with awstats because of the
number of logs it can handle, and easy setup. (A big bonus for lazy
people like me:)

Speaking of Symantec, I find that their Virus Bulletins have more
marketing babble than actual virus information. Does anyone know of an
early warning mailing list that lets you know about virus outbreaks,
without all the marketing hype?

Hi all,
I'm looking for a way to log logins (Successful, attempted) to a Win2K
file server. It needs to log IP and MAC addresses, username, password
and date/time, and if possible stick it to an ODBC database. Anyone got
any ideas?
