When my client switches to the SMTP server provide by his ISP he never sees
this problem. This is what he is currently using. Everyone else's email
seems to be working fine though.

You can remove a mail from a repository if you know the mail name (primary
key).
You shouldn't use FileObjectStore or FileStreamStore directly.
What is the workflow that you need to delete the mail? When do you need to
delete?

problem and its seemed to revolve around an issue when using MS Outlook
2003 and James. It appears that read receipts sent from recipient back
to sender never actually make it, and instead cause an error similar to
the one you
Auth isn't required in this conversation (pruned below) because it never
even gets as far as "Command received: MAIL FROM"
In the sucess example auth isn't required because mail is to local user.
I don't think James SMTP AUTH is your problem here.
