Thanks Stefano, that solved it. There were two
nnn.Repository.FileObjectStore files with the bounce user in it. One
had a longer nnn string at the beginning and its create date was from
when I first installed James. I deleted that file, then telnetted in again,
and this time was able to
Here's the transcript of my recent telnet session, it's pretty
self-explanatory. However I'm not sure how I created two users with the
same name 'bounce'. Any ideas why, and how I can delete the other,
seemingly undeleteable, bounce user? Thanks!

I'm using 2.3.0, it's just that most of the articles on the web are for

Thanks Norman, I'm using James 2.3.0, just downloaded a few days ago. The
UserRepository config is Jame's default:
The only config.xml settings I've changed are servernames, dnsserver,
postmaster address, and to disable nntp server (and set nntp threads to 0).

Thanks Bernd, I had the same thought when it first occurred and tried many
times, being careful to avoid typos and not using backspace, delete, or
anything that might introduce special characters. The output I posted was
the result of that. Sometimes it works the first time, no errors.

Hi all, apologies for the continuing questions but a new one just came up.
When initially setting up James, I telnetted into remote admin and created
two users, reply and bounce. However, my MUA is giving an error saying it
can't authenticate the user 'bounce'. So to troubleshoot I telnetted ba

Thanks, tried that but no luck. Also, I just found this guide to setting up
James, which says to leave both autodetects set to true:

Hello, I'm running James and Vignette Messenger, the MUA, on the same server.
Are there any config changes I need to make to get James working with the
MUA on the same server? Currently my outgoing mails from Messenger are not
reaching their destination, and Messenger is giving an authentication

Thanks! I did that, but no luck. Just so I'm clear, James is a standalone
mail server, right? All it needs to send mail is itself, a dns server, and
Hi all, James (and mailserver) noob, need a little help getting it running.
So far I've followed, to the best of my knowledge, the steps in the James
docs installation and configuration guide, as well as everything in the IBM
Developer Works article on working with James
