Maybe not the remote mail servers are refusing the connection, but some
machine in between - a firewall :-). You could try to telnet any of the
target servers on port 25 from the machine running James.

I found the driver thanks. I can get the server to start now. I can
connect to it but it sends all mail to a user I created in the
virtualUserTable to the relay denied folder.

Another point - make sure you're running mysql on tcp, as well as the unix
socket file, beacuse AFAIK jdbc will only use tcp!

I found a '.jar' file for '3.1.8a'. I put that in the 'lib' directory.
James will start with no apparent errors but it still refuses
connections. How do I turn on debug logging?

download the connectorj 3.0.9 driver from the mysql site and put it
in your lib directory, then you need to go into your datasource and
switch the driver from org.gjt.mm.mysql to com.mysql.jdbc.Driver
