I asked a member about this on my '87 once. I think he said they stopped
using clips to hold it after '85

I have had good luck restoring plastic bits with JB weld.
It may take a few applications to build up larger bits, but when cured
it seems to hold up well.
The texture may be an issue in some cases, but I have been able to
convert to a wrinkle finish with good results.
