You can remove the starter without removing any axles, if you have equal length axles. Just take the bolts out of the hanger for the half shaft and the turbo support brace has to be removed. Then, it will drop down by the loose half shaft. Been there done that (recently too). Good luck.

I will second this. I changed 4 starters in a month on my old '83 Omni (got a run of bad starters). It is a royal pain, but it can be done. I used a couple of extensions and a u-joint that we braced by wrapping it up in duct tape. Sure made me appreciate the new starter arrangement when I s
