This is quiet easy as one can just mis-click into the toolbar. In my view
making these modes default upon a single click (or mis-click) is a bit

First of all: links are mostly handeled by Apple's PDFKit. Moreover,

Unfortunately simply left clicking on a link of any kind does nothing for

I agree that would certainly be very logical :) Perhaps my installation of
Skim is broken.
Could anyone confirm that left clicking jumps to an external link?

It works with me consistently with internal links. I tried this will a pdf I
created with LaTeX using the hyperref package. If I click on a reference I am
taken to the reference. If I Command click I get a preview.
However, only about half of the URLs I click on open in my browser... Strange.

Thanks Maurice,
I guess that is what I need to figure out how to do - get Skim into highlight

Perhaps a better idea would be to open up the restriction Skim makes that you
have to select text before you can highlight it, underline it or strike through
it. It took me a little while to figure out that Skim require you to make the
selection first - clearly this is not intuitive.

with a macro program (eg QuicKeys) and a programmable mouse, you can
get pretty close to what you propose.

Innovative maybe?
No, it is not standard, but actually not original. Take for example LyX which
enables one to repeat the last font change. Think of mouse gestures. Combine
the two ideas.

I'd say that would me more a function for the OS than an individual
program. I wouldn't even know how to do that. And generally it is a
bad idea to do non-standard things, and this is extremely non-standard
behavior.
