Just include . in the pattern: cd /home for i in *.* ; do tar cfz $i.tar.gz /home/$i done I assume that tar is gnu tar, which can write gzip file directly, if that's not the case then you can do: tar cf - /home/$i | gzip $i.tar.gz BTW, tar is exceptional in that it doesn't require a leading -
