Thanks Mark. This seems to be letting the IMAP client upload all archive mails
to Gmail one by one. I do have a few problems with this.
1. The mails are now on the hosting provided server and we access via their web
interface. No client involved until this point.
2. There's 6G of them!

I did a post on my blog about this some time ago, it was between gmail and
gmail apps. But the theory is the same, use imapsync if you have imap on
your existing provider it is script-able which could be helpful;

How and where are your archives stored?
You can get Gmail apps to connect to a server and pull down any mail that is
sitting there (eg if you use IMAP) easily.
