All that setup sounds like hard work, for RedHat 7.2 you could from the
GUI just go. Programs, System, Network Configuration, click on the
devices tab and add an xDSL connection and fill in the info and it's just
there, comes up as a 'ppp' interface when viewed from /sbin/ifconfig.

Well my experience has been the contrary.
On one I provided a Win 2K box and the tech did the install with no probs
on my own NIC. I then showed him how easy the Linux install was and he
left me with the Supplied NIC (loose) and the filter.
In the other case I arrived on site at the same time
If you look at the rp-pppoe scripts you will see that they do this MTU
adjustment that is necessary.
