Just use gimp.
You can reduce the image resolution and increase the compression (with more loss).
I often turn 1mb images into 70k ones using gimp for web pages.
Basically open gimp then open the image you want to reduce
File - Open
Choose image file
To adjust the resolution just go

Just use gimp.
Not so good for batch use. :-)

I meant scaling.
Since emailing I have discovered synaptic, and was able to install
Imagemagick, very easily I might add. (I knew switching to Ubuntu would
be a good thing... ;-))
