Hands up who has seen the infamous hda: interrupt lost kernel error
message? You've just hard-reset your PC, because it seemed to be frozen,
Hey! I always wondered about that one... time for me to now add that to the list of

Sorry if not strictly linux centred, but a search of the SLUG archives
Title: RE: [SLUG] hard drive choices
Modern Fujitsu drives tend to have a very strong reputation.
I've even hauled a couple from Africa to Europe and then back
here into Oz without any problems.
As for warranties... most companies are now settling for a 1
year warranty
The unofficial figure on those was a 30% failure rate.
(theregister.co.uk has details on this from about a month ago)
Guess that goes to prove the comments previously that all manufacturers tend to have
'lemons' produced now and then.
Quantums are not good - been replacing lots of them

We basically seem to all come down to the same thing... there's a high level of
'unreliability' involved in modern hard drives. The next logical question is to ask,
what is the form of the failures?
Anyone give some opinions? Are we seeing an increase in IDE controller failures ( on
HDD ) or

i rang up seagate personally and they denied they had a problem with the

not sure how deserved it was.
APC had a hard drive review recently, certain Western Digital
drives came out both quietest and fastest.
I've been very happy with my Maxtor 40 and 80Gb drives.

I'd look at the warranty conditions -- for instance, the Quantum Maxtor
warranties weren't nearly as the Seagates when I last looked...

Worst drives I've ever used (IMHO). I've had 5 fail in production boxen
in the last 6 months. Very nasty problems, you hear the click of death

It depends.
Over time, all companies have managed to produce lemons.
I was buying on the basis of warranty (if I had a choice), but most are
