I have just checked all my disks (except the one my Mac start-up disk) and
they all have this option at the bottom. See attached screen grab.
Was the external drive formatted for Apple "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)"?

Not sure what the triangle means but if it is a red no entry symbol:
For an external drive, if all you want to do is access the flies therein,
select the drive and do a Get Info on it (in File Menu).
Right at the bottom of the window that opens you will see a check box marked
"Ignore own
