I have only just read this post as I am away at moment, anyhow forensically
webmail is nearly impossible to recover unless you contact the administrator,
but if its a windows machine using outlook the recovery is more likely as
outlook saves emails in a dbx format and dbx files can be recove

Are they in the deleted items folder?
Deleting emails from your computer would only free up space on the server if
it's an IMAP account. Did you delete the emails directly from the inbox on the
server or in outlook?

Contact your hosting company (where the co.uk is located) as quickly as
you can.
They will probably have a backup of the mail area of his account on the
server.
