For a serious attempts at "seeing" thermals, you might want to poke
around at the University of Wisconsin. Many years ago, before the Internet,
a meteorologist from there gave a talk on looking at thermals with a special
radar device during the then popular "MARCS R/C Soaring Symposiums" held

simple DC motor. I was going to devise a simple mechanical switch that as
the tension decreased it would actuate the motor. Instead I have run the
