I have eight JR Tx modules; four are PPM only, four are PCM. The PPM
crystals are not removable. The crystals in four PCM modules are
normal and easily removable/changeable. I believe the four PPM-only
modules are older (from Century Seven systems). The age of the PCM
modules vary from 10
Hitec transmitters have the crystal exposed on the front of the case.

Hey there Andrew,
That is correct. The XTAL in the TX module is hidden, ie: it is on the inside
surface of the module housing and does not have attachments like plastic
overlays to allow easy removal from the housing (not sure this is so on all
module-based TX). This is/was considered adequate

Err, no. Canada allows it.
I have an e-mail from the Department of Communications stating that as
long as the crystal was made user accessble by the maufacturer, and
the crystal is available to end-users from the manufacturer, then i
Nope, same rules up here in Canuckland. The TX front end requires tuning,
whereas the RX does not (in most cases). This is precisely why modules were
designed to be interchangeable...they contain the front circuitry "with" the
XTAL that it was originally tuned to.

No problem. They were designed to meet the FCC requirements as they are the
RF part of the transmitter.

Yes. This is an extremely dangerous practice and must be avoided ... in
the USA only. If you do this in any other country it is not considered
dangerous and is not illegal. Something magical happens when you cross
the border apparently.

How about module swapping? It's the entire RF module, as opposed to
just the crystal.

For what it's worth, FCC regulations do not permit crystal swapping in
modules.
