Problem solved. The hint about putting 'hiddenmenu' into GRUB's
menu.lst file did the trick. I have not tried the other suggestions.
They might make it work too.

not. (The i686 is just a title, the kernel is actually built for i586)

the BIOS update does work ;-)) the old
partition table is still present. Writing to the disk with cp does not
work either.
