Thx Patrick, a cage deformer does makes sense in this case.
It seems the frame snapping can't be turned off. That's.very unusual, to
put it mildly :-/
Create and deform the lattice, select mesh and Deform by Cage.

Is there anything else out there that might work? Hiero is Mac only, so
