I would suggest going into Maya, it's OBJ reader is a bit more
flexible. Then re-export is using FBX or Collada to get it into
Softimage. I've seen this work before.

There are two .obj importers in recent versions of Softimage. The
second one is through the FBX Import options; you should be able to
change the file filters to *.obj and then the FBX library will do the
importing,
if you do not have that option, you can download the FBX Converter
from Autodesk
