issue resolve. problem was that solr.war was silently not being overwritten
by new version.

I did apply the SOLR-1297-2.patch supplied by Koji Sekiguchi but
it didn't seem to help.
I am using solr 903398 2010-01-26 20:21:09Z.
Any suggestions appreciated.
