We put floor controls in rated stairwells all the time so I do not see why you
couldn’t/ shouldn’t.

John,
I think this may have gone to the wrong person. I was struggling with the local
3rd party plans examiner requiring that we pull a fire permit on the domestic
underground line that feeds the fire sprinklers.

We have been required to perform a flow test using the city fire truck and the
top two hose valves. I only did it once but the firemen seemed excited to do
it. I have been required to run some quick calculations to tell them what
pressure the pumper needed to provide at the FDC to give them the

Brian,
This would be a cross connection of the potable water system with wastewater.
At minimum you would need a 1" air gap.

Shove it full of insulation and presto! You have non-combustible enclosed blind

Brett,
I think you answered your own question. “I always choose whatever gives me the
greatest pressure loss not necessarily the larger flow.” Wouldn’t that by
definition be the hydraulically most demanding area regardless of location?
It’s exactly what I do also in this situation.

The amount of water that you will get out of a three-quarter inch water line
will be useless in trying to fight an electric vehicle fire.

Thank you Craig, That is perfect. I was conveying this issue to the builder and
his response was “I have no idea”. Not very helpful…

Interested to see the responses as I'm dealing with this same question. Also
when the building has breezeways instead of corridors how do you get from one
block of units to the other without having piping in an unheated area?

Chris-
But if I'm telling them the size pump we need, say 1000gpm @ 70psi in this
case, how would they oversize the pump?

Brian,
Since the pressure at the pump discharge is city pressure + pump boost pressure
then they need that pressure to properly size the pump.
Example: You need 1500gpm @ 105psi to make your system work but you only have
35psi residual pressure available from the city supply when flowing
Tiny little ½ drain holes which constantly get plugged up and overflow running
water all over the base and floor. Why these aren't larger is beyond me.

account for it in your hydraulic calculations for the sprinkler system.

I would have to agree with Matt. A new CO would mean it should be reviewed as a
new building and must meet all the requirements for protection of that
particular type of construction.
