I have no idea what the origins were but I recall many years ago being told to figure the weight of 500 Gallons of water (500 x 8 lbs= 4000 lbs) times a factor of 1.25 for pipe and fittings which would give you 5000 lbs. I'm guessing the formula came from the NFPA 13 500 gallon limit per system
