see if I can setup an nginx reverse proxy.
If you can use Docker and don't already have a web server to use for
this proxying, I find the Nginx Proxy Manager to be a powerful and
relatively easy to use tool for this task:

Do not attempt any reverse proxying, i.e. do not move LMS into a
subfolder of the proxying web server. It does not work and all that
you'll see is a green screen.

concerned with the local browsing experience, which still seems to be
degraded. In addition to the "Not secure" warning which appears in the
browser, when I click on App Gallery, I get a frowny face, which I am
wildly speculating

No. As the integrated web server is used to stream to the players, too,
and as the players cannot handle https, this isn't really an option.
https is importent in non trusted environments, eg. the internet. But in
a LAN only application
