lo squidsters,
Does someone know how Mass Mailers and Spiders can be blocked via squid from
functioning?
It seems to draw up more bandwidth even when I used delay pool to restrick
it on a system to just 2K ( ;) i really wanted to slow it down if i couldnt
stop it)
I actually tried using HTB
Thanks so much, that was a wonderful response, you got me going, there is
some hope ;), let me answer some of the questions u posed

Mass mailers generally use SMTP over port 25, which Squid has nothing
to
Then, you dont know what your missing or you got alot of bandwidth to
BURN!!!

I cannot answer about delay pools - I have never used them. Maybe someone
else can comment.

lo,
if ur Squid port is 3128
then the correct iptable rule to redirect to squid is
iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -p TCP --dport 80 -j REDIRECT --to-port 3128
I am also assuming your doing NAT or are u talking about TPROXY?

Hi Henrik,
Previously when i use squid, it seems just fine, it caches and browsing
seems to be ok, but recently I activated delay pools for the same network,
and ever since then, my browsing is extremely fast, overthrottling I might
add.
am just curious, is this the work of delay pools, cause
I forgot to post this:
Any squid user, also using IP Telephony and running squid on his gateway

Hi Masood,
My question about delay pools, is whether I can use it to limit both the
downstream and upstream traffic of a computer system ip
cause I want to limit 5 different client IP address to 5k downlink and 2k
uplink.
Can u give me a sample configuration to effect this.
Thanks
Kalu

i was intereseted in your list blocking too
This is the wrong list to ask the question, but the answer is to use IP
Masquerading or NAT, if your using Linux which I assume u are, it comes
bundled in the kernel, configure with iptables, you can find many examples
on the net, google for iptables

hi,
now u mentioned it, i just did a check, i also did a squid-2.5-stable3

normal, considering the new improvements and patches done on the code, the
development size, well just as u said, i concur
Maybe Henrik will be
do you know of email spiders and email mass mailing programs, there good
culprits at choping up bandwidth, and if u dont have some sort bandwidth
manager, it means u could have some users downloading at 10 times the speed
for normal http access

read your reply to Pada's problem, am using htb for this solution too and
not squid, but I cant manage the inbound/outbound traffic properly or so it
seems, so bandwidth hogging tools, like email spiders and email harvesters
tend to suck it up, am trying to look into IMQ method.
Am wondering

From what your saying, i guess u have to re-write squid itself!
on the other hand, am having a similar problem but for a different purpose I
want to filter http traffic, and I have been pointed to the possibilty of
using ICAP server and client, as you noted, squid passess the request, but
this
to hear from any of you soon
