I have no idea why, but all of a sudden, after reinstalling and
reconfiguring squid 3.2.0.18 from scratch, my Ubuntu Server 12.04 64
bit VM started working. I really did nothing special to get it to run
- just the same as I've been doing. As soon as this happened, I
quickly followed the same steps
Eureka!
It appears that despite ipv6 being disabled on the Ubuntu Server OS
itself, it was still interfering with the helper somehow. All I had to
do was change the line in squid.conf that starts with
external_acl_type to read:
external_acl_type session ipv4 ...
and all of a sudden, cache.log

I have made a video that proves that this is not just a case of some
other program getting the splash page, but it was too big for the
mailing lists, so I uploaded it here:

What it basically shows is:
a) squid running in a CentOS VM, and access.log messages
I just tried the same squid configuration on Ubuntu Mini remix 11.04

installing it). They both work perfectly, just like CentOS. Whatever
the problem is, it appears to be specific to Ubuntu 12.04 Server
edition for some reason, which

Thank you for the abundance of information you have provided - I'm
going through it all now to get a better understanding of
squid_session and how it works, as well as the external_acl_type
directive.

Has anyone successfully used squid, and the squid_session helper in
order to force users of the proxy server to see a webpage (be

A splash page can be presented at any time. You just need appropriate ACL or
helper logics to decide when. The session helper bundled with Squid is
only applicable when there is a timeout to be applied.
We do not at this point provide a helper to
Hello,
I need to configure Splash Page with Squid in some company. When

accept rules (with Splash Page - i guess). Right.
But in squid_session I can use '-t SEC' for overall timeout (in
example 7200 sec). But what if I need it

It's a BDB key-value database, not a log.
It only contains timestamps when each session was last
Hi,
I'm running squid with authentication in LDAP. Everytime the users open
the browser a login window is opening. Works good! But i'd also want the
users to see a start page everytime they log in. I have set up
squid_session ( located in /usr/lib/squid using Debian Lenny). This happens:

HI,
I am trying to debug my configuration to get squid_session working.
I am following a recent thread about this issue, but couldn't solve my
problem yet. I read some old threads, but, if I didn't missed
something, my config is like expected.
I based my config lines in squid_session.8 man page.
