kept me away from sundials for a time, but now, in a way,

of dials commemorating eclipses. I did not find much from internet

Of course one thing led to another and after my initial explanation, the
next question was how many eclipses the earth gets in a year. At this
point I admitted my ignorance of the full facts, but said I knew a group of
people who would know chapter and verse on the matter!

complicated. The shadow of the moon on the earth is in fact very small and
the chances for any misalignment to prevent an eclipse being observed are
also high.

In view of the Earth's mass of 81 moons, the gravicenter mind you is
still under the surface of the Earth, but not so close to the center of the
Earth: it moves around constantly. That's not trivial either, for us!
Number of eclipses: 5 maximum, 2 solar and 3 lunar. Lunar
In 1582 there were two solar eclipses and three lunar eclipses.
Lunar Eclipses were, all of them, of penumbral type and their magnitude was
very low, so I think, they could have been appreciated with difficulty or
not at all.
Anyway, the first one (June 6th) was visible from Mexico City only

I want to thank everyone who responded to my request for information on an
historical lunar eclipse. Thanks to Tony Kitto, the correct eclipse was
found to be on September 26/27, 1577.
The Sundial list is a fabulous resource for practical astronomy information.

From Fred Espenak's wonderful Eclipse Pages at NASA, I found the following
two solar eclipses in 1582. The first was total, but of quite short
duration (and) low magnitude, with the maximum 110 degrees East of
Greenwich. The second was Annular, with it's maximum in the southern
hemisphere

Hi Dialers,
It's been my experience that penumbral eclipses are almost invisble, so don't
expect too great of a show on Jan 31st.
