Is it too soon to regularly include SVG in mail?
I don't usually use html in email, however to facilitate this
discussion have added an SVG email signature.

The URL you gave woks fine for me in the beta version of Firefox
Minefield/3.0b4pre with STIX fonts. I am not sure these fonts are
necessary, but I have them just as default for SVG. You can download
the STIX fonts from:
http://www.mozilla.org/projects/mathml/fonts/stix/STIXBeta.zip;
I also had that problem. In mathematical graphics the positive y axis
usually points upwards. Using a different coordinate system for
positioning the text is not quite elegant. My solution is, when
you've got a text which is inside a group with transform=scale(1,-
1) then instead of
text x=1
