After I unzip the file, the XML file I open is in some sort of binary
format that I can't read.

It's not actually binary. Gedit won't open it, but Kate will! Seems to
be a problem perhaps with the UTF-8 encoding.

Ha, you're right! It's double compressed. :-) Change the extension to
.gz and then uncompress again.

You're using the wrong versification system for that Bible. MT means
Masoretic Text, which is an OT-only versification system. So it is
correct, that isn't a valid osisID for that system.
I'm not sure which one will work for you, but NRSV, Synodal, or German
would be the first ones I would
