Listers,
I was somewhat surprised to read in this morning's paper that
Iowa and Illinois State have new cross country and track field
coaches. Wayne Angel, who was at Wichita State last year, is the new
women's head XC and asst TF at Iowa. What happened to Joan Hansen
at Iowa?
Jeff Pigg is now at the university of florida...

We were told a while ago on this list that Kenyans would never make
sprinters or footballers. Wrong body shape was the expression I remember.

It's funny you ask, Randall. I was just having lunch with a business
colleague here in New York and he said Gee, I wonder what's happening in
the Commonwealth Games Rugby Sevens.
:-)
They must be Kenyans from West Africa
Conversely, David Krumemnacker must somehow be of east African descent,
either that or his recent hot middle distance performances did not happen -
or so we're told.

Are any of them from the rift valley? Kenya's distance runners come from a
very small population in Kenya. I don't think any of the major
ethno-national groups in Kenya has produced any great distance runners.

Hey Paul,
While most of Kenya's celebrated distance runners are Kalenjin (group of
tribes including the Nandi, Terik, Kipsigis...), there are a few exceptions.
Most notably, John Ngugi (5 CC world titles and 1 Olympic gold in the 5k) is
a Kikuyu, the most populous ethnic group in Kenya.

Before I'd ever vote for her as AOY she'd have to win a major track race.
Sorry, Commonwealth doesn't count, old chaps.
In a non WC/Oly year, what counts as a major track race? From what I saw
of the Commonwealth Games results, sure looked a lot

I'd say the 3k/marathon is in the same ballpark. George Young was mostly a
steepler and he made the Oly Marathon team. Another George who roams the
list was also a good steepler/marathoner.
The steeplechase is run at 10k pace per lap. If you

As much as I've been beating the drum for picking London Marathon (et al)
winner Paula Radcliffe as prospective women's AOY, I don't think Khannouchi
has any chnace of rating as men's AOY (unless maybe he breaks 2:05 at
Chicago).
His won-loss record outside of the marathon is pretty
When talking about Radcliffe it's important to note not that she just moved
up from world class track (and half-marathon) ability to the marathon, but
that just three months later she's gone back down to the shorter distances
and run faster than ever.

I think field event fans whine too much about the lack of respect their
favorites get in regards to AOY recognition.
A busy field-eventer can rack up 15 or 20 wins a year and that 20-0 record
looks pretty good at year's end even though a handful of those wins may have

i don't think steeplers do better in 10ks/cross than 1500s and 5ks.
actually, most of the good US steeplers now weren't the best XC runners in
college. For the most part they are all 1500/steeple guys. Some can go up
to the 5k.
However, 4K cross- now there is an event where steeplers do
