That's it! Thanks, Bill (and everyone else who replied). That was
driving me crazy.
I just found on a google search that it got made into a 1970 movie,
starring Michael Crawford and Ryan O'Neal.

You're thinking of "The Games" by Hugh Atkinson, published in 1968 - and
made into a movie. Don't recall if I saw it - probably did but one represses
terrible memories. Starred Ryan O'Neal - who was about as believable as a
marathoner as Michael Douglas was in a similar role. And Erich Segal
You're referring to "The Games" by Hugh Atkinson, which also became a real
potboiler of a movie (1970) with Stanley Baker and Ryan O'Neal (as a
marathoner!) as the most recognizable of the principals.

I'm almost certain the book you have in mind is The Games by Hugh Atkinson,
Simon & Schuster, 1967-68.
A friend, knowing of my interest, recommended it to me years ago, and I own
it. But, I must confess, I have never read it through. The marathon is the
theme, though, for sure. An American, an E
In high school, I stumbled across a book in the library that I think
was titled "The Olympics," but I'm not sure. Can't remember the
author. It was a fictional novel, not particularly good, and I think
set in a fictional Latin American nation, although it was clearly
supposed to be Mexico City
Australian coach Tony Benson wrote about a figure that links an athlete's
speed and endurance called "stamina indicator" in the excellent book "Run
with the best" (co-author Irv Ray), among other things they wrote in 1998:

It's not quite March Madness, but I would hope that collegiate track can

Maybe it comes from being 4 years older, but El Guerrouj certainly doesn't
seem to have the finishing kick now that he did in 1998. Not that the last
300 in Rieti was exactly slow, but compare it to his world record:
Rome '98: 2:46.34 @ 1200m + 39.66 last 300m = 3:26.00
Rieti '02: 2:44.75 @ 1200m
