Anyway it is up to you. I do suggest Ubuntu because I am using Tahoe-LAFS
on Ubuntu and it works well :)

Both *curl* and *wget* works perfectly when querying node status with
"?t=json" argument - just tested on Ubuntu.
I can't see any reason to complicate *monitoring tools* with changing
headers while parameter is quite enough!

cacti and munin users here :)
Actually, output of already mentioned link (
http://node.example.com:3456/statistics?t=json) can easily be used to
retrieve it.
